Interweaving Traditions: Bookbinding Across Cultures
April 2014 (Victoria Timpo)
From 2012-2014, Victoria Timpo, a candidate in the Masters in Fine Arts Curatorial Practice program at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), partnered with RYP to organize a project called Interweaving Traditions.
Local book-artists, including Arlington-based educator Sushmita Mazumdar and Baltimore-based bookbinders Martha Edgerton, Ingrid Schindall and Suzanne Coley, facilitated workshops at two RYP locations. They taught storytelling techniques, a variety of hand binding methods, and how to create interesting covers using different artistic mediums.
The students’ completed work was exhibited at the Creative Alliance, the Enoch Pratt Free Library and the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. The books offered audiences an extraordinary and artistic look at students’ lives and insights to the sensitive experiences of refugees.
