Identity: Finding Sanctuary

May 2013 (Rebecca Green)

Over a four month period, Ms. Green shared mandalas from around the world with RYP students at Moravia Park Primary School to spark discussions about identity, relationships and security. Throughout the process, using materials and techniques such as Shibori textile, sand, mosaic, painting and collage opened a gateway to deeper discussions within the group.

Viewing and interacting with relevant artwork in the Walters Art Museum’s collection also proved to be an effective method to increase dialogue concerning identity and religion. Students formed new relationships with their peers and the greater community of Baltimore by exploring, respecting and accepting their differences, which will serve as a strong foundation as they continue to grow into strong and unique individuals.

The art workshops required students to work together, to support each other, and to promote acceptance, surpassing the idea of tolerance.
