Art As Intervention

August 2013 (Rebecca Green)

During RYP’s 2013 Summer Academy, Rebecca Green facilitated art-based lessons in response to reports of increased violence, bullying, and reported safety incidents in refugee students’ neighborhoods. She approached Luminous Intervention, a Baltimore-based video projection art and activist group, to assist in the creation of a large-scale light installation that could raise awareness in the surrounding community.

The project found a natural fit in the Frankford neighborhood’s National Night Out Festival, where the installation was projected onto the side of Northeast Middle School prior to a police-supported community safety walk. Messages advocated for peace, education, communication and understanding.
